Description
Lochalsh Parish Church is a rectangular church built between 1804 and 1806. It was repaired in 1910 by Robert J Macbeth. The church is harled, with tooled margins and quoins. It has four round-headed windows on its south elevation, and one similar window on each of its east and west gables, all featuring a distinctive intersecting Y-glazing pattern. A smaller window was added later to the north elevation, providing light to a later vestry. The roof is slate.
Inside, the church has a galleried interior. The gallery front is panelled and supported by wooden pilasters. The interior also contains later 19th-century pews and a pulpit.
A walled graveyard surrounds the church, containing a late medieval grave slab. This slab is decorated with an incised sword and the initials "F M", along with a recumbent figure holding a sword.
The church remains in ecclesiastical use.
References to the building's history can be found in an advertisement for tenders in the Edinburgh Evening Courant of May 31, 1804, and in the Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland (c. 1858). A report of the 1910 repairs appeared in the Northern Chronicle of July 20, 1910. George Hay's book, The Architecture of Scottish Post-Reformation Churches (1957), discusses the building on page 272.
