Description

This is a large, 3-storey, 9-bay Scottish Baronial mansion, designed by Alexander Ross and built in 1866. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled dressings, featuring gabled and crenellated details. Two square, crenellated towers rise one stage above the main roofline. A porte cochere is located on the south front, and a large crenellated canted bay window projects from the north side. The windows are fitted with 2-pane glazing, and the roof is covered in slate, topped by corniced end and ridge stacks. A single-storey service court sits to the west, alongside a single-storey, 3-bay chapel and a 2-stage octagonal water tower. A large, modern addition extends to the east.

The interior features original chimneypieces, doorpieces, and enriched ceilings.

A 2-storey, 3-bay gabled laundry building is present, with an external stair and constructed of rubble with tooled dressings. The north elevation has three bipartites on both the ground and first floors. The slate roof is topped with a small ridge cupola.

The symmetrical, 2-storey, 5-bay stables comprise a courtyard with a segmental headed arched entrance bay with gabled detailing. Ground-floor windows are arranged as bipartites in the outer bays, fitted with 2-pane glazing. Two small modern dormers are present, alongside end and ridge stacks, and a slate roof.

Behind the main building is a large, walled garden. A marble plaque above the entrance to the stables bears the inscription: "FEAR GOD, WORK HARD, BE HONEST." Duncraig Castle is currently a Home Economics College within the Highland Region. Information about the construction was advertised in the Inverness Advertiser on 3 April 1866, and further details are available from The Buildings of Scotland Research Unit.
