Description
This laundry building, dating from 1866, was designed by Alexander Ross in the Scottish Baronial style. It is a two-storey, three-bay gabled structure with a porch and external staircase. The construction is rubble with tooled dressings, and it features three bipartites (two-light windows) on its north-facing elevation, one on each floor. It has a slate roof topped with a small ridge cupola.
The laundry is part of the wider Duncraig Castle estate, which includes stables and a walled garden. Duncraig Castle itself is a large, asymmetrical, three-storey, nine-bay mansion with gabled and crenellated detailing, built of coursed rubble with tooled dressings. Two square, crenellated towers rise one stage above the roofline. A porte cochere is located at the south front entrance, and a large crenellated canted bay window projects from the north side. The stables form a symmetrical, two-storey, five-bay court with segmental headed arched entrance bays and two-pane glazing. A marble plaque above the stable entrance reads "FEAR GOD, WORK HARD, BE HONEST." An advertisement for tenders appeared in the Inverness Advertiser on 3rd April 1866, and further information is available from The Buildings of Scotland Research Unit. The estate is now used as a Home Economics College in the Highland Region and includes a single-storey service court with a chapel and an octagonal water tower. A large, modern addition is located to the east. The interiors feature original fireplaces, door surrounds and enriched ceilings.
