Description
This is an early 19th century hay barn situated at Kirkton of Lochalsh. It was originally built using cruck construction techniques. The barn is constructed of coursed rubble stone, pinned together, with a wattled north gabled end and louvred side vents. One cruck stump remains visible in the west wall. The roof is covered in corrugated iron. The barn measures approximately 70 feet by 18 feet. Reverend A Downie, who served as Minister of Lochalsh from 1791 to 1821, is recorded as having built several creel-barns on his farm. This barn was originally divided into two units, though the internal partition has since been removed. Historical records, including writings by I F Grant, Sir George Steuart Mackenzie, and the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, document the barn and its context.
