Description
The building, dating to circa 1870 and designed in the style of Alexander Ross, is a single-story range of single-room dwellings arranged in a U-plan around a rear court. It originally served as a poorhouse. The building is constructed of whitewashed rubble with eight bays on the front frontage. The front features broad, advanced gables at the ends and two smaller gables with doors in bays number three and six. The flanks are symmetrical, also with similar gable detailing and a central door. Most of the original four-pane windows remain; there are blind vents on each gable, and the end and ridge stacks have been renewed. The roof is slate. The building now functions as two dwellings. It was gifted by Sir Daniel and Lady Hamilton of Balmacara. Originally, each room was furnished with a grate, a bed, bedding, and free fuel.
