Description
The property comprises an early 19th century barn and a small, U-plan steading at Auchtertyre. The barn served as a hay, threshing, and winnowing barn. It is constructed of coursed rubble with rounded corners, and has louvred side and gable end vents. Three pairs of scarfed cruck timbers remain, all jointed at the wallhead and secured with three wooden pegs and one iron bolt at each joint. Each cruck blade at the wallhead has an iron spur. The barn is covered by a corrugated iron roof and measures approximately 60 feet by 15 feet. A raised circular horse-walk is situated on the east side of the barn. The steading is a single storey of differing heights, built of harled rubble with a slate roof. The fourth side of the steading is enclosed by a rubble wall. The barn and steading were built by Mr M'Donnell of Barrisdale (Glenelg Parish), who spent £700 on their construction.
