Description

Tweedmouth Memorial Chapel, part of the Royal Northern Infirmary on Ness Walk in Inverness, was designed by John Smith from Banff between 1799 and 1804. The original structure is a two-storey, five-bay centre block, with the central three bays slightly advanced and featuring a pediment supported by giant Corinthian pilasters on both floors. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with a channelled ground floor, and has a slated piended and bellcast roof. Originally, this centre block was connected by single-storey, three-bay quadrants to two-storey, three-bay pavilions topped with pyramidal roofs.

Alterations were made by Matthews & Lawrie from 1864 to 1866, which raised the quadrants to three storeys. The pavilions were reconstructed and deepened, also receiving piended roofs. Further additions by Ross & Macbeth between 1896 and 1898 included a two-storey porte-cochere and an operating theatre block extending from the centre bay of the front. This addition features an ashlar exterior with a rusticated ground floor, coupled Corinthian angle pilasters supporting an open pediment at the gable on the first floor, and tripartite windows, except for a round-arched, keyblocked bipartite window with panelled aprons at the first floor gable.

The Tweedmouth Memorial Chapel, also designed by Ross & Macbeth from 1896 to 1898, is a cruciform structure in a lancet style made of snecked rubble. It is connected to the south gable of the main infirmary building by a corridor that includes a transverse porch. The chapel has three-bay flanks with transepts projecting from the centre bays, featuring paired lancet windows on the outer sides, triple stepped lancets at the gables of the transepts, triple stepped traceried lancets at the south gable, and a rose window at the north gable, along with angle buttresses. Internally, the transepts are designed for use as Roman Catholic and Episcopal chapels, with a roof made of panelled oak and furnishings also crafted from oak.
