Description
Dunnichen is a two-story house built in 1897. It has an asymmetrical design with three bays and is double-piled, with further gabled extensions at the rear. The house is constructed from dark rubble with contrasting polished ashlar dressings, featuring channelled ashlar angle margins. The front gables are emphasised with a projecting west bay and an off-centre porch linked to a small, glazed sun room via a shallow, tiled lean-to roofed structure featuring decorative cast-iron cresting. A canted bay window is present on the ground floor of the west gable, topped with a decorative ashlar parapet. The first-floor gables include windows of a Venetian style, with ashlar roundels positioned above. A small round dormer window is also present. The projecting eaves are ornamented with ornate brackets, bargeboards, and canted cast-iron rhones decorated with small anthemion finials, along with similarly detailed acroteria. The house has panelled, corniced, and hipped end stacks, and a slate roof.
The house was originally built by a Mr Fraser, who made his fortune through ostrich farming in South Africa, and was initially named Rondeboch or Rhondesbosch. The dormer window was sourced from a catalogue by MacFarlane's of Glasgow, and the other cast-iron details were likely from the same firm. The house now serves as two separate dwellings.
