Description
This is a Gothic parish church, largely rebuilt around 1800. Subsequent repairs and improvements were carried out by William Robertson in 1839, George Rhind in 1846, and a restoration with interior re-decoration by Ross and Macbeth in 1891. The church is cruciform in layout and constructed of red rubble with broached or polished ashlar dressings. It was built on the site of an earlier church, incorporating parts of the original structure. The building is oriented east to west. A blocked entrance is located in the southwest corner, and a small, blocked door is in the southeast corner; several other windows are also blocked. A simple Gothic entrance is in the centre of the west gable, and a large, traceried window in the Perpendicular style is in the east gable. The interior is plain, featuring a coved ceiling lined with pine. A small, recumbent effigy, measuring 3 feet 6 inches long and featuring a sword, is located at the west end of the church, behind a pew. The church remains in ecclesiastical use and is notable as one of the few parish churches on the Black Isle still in use on its original medieval site.
