Description
The stable square and clocktower cottage at Redcastle Mains is a U-shaped arrangement of three ranges, each built at a different time. The main range, viewed across the park from the castle, is a two-story structure with seven bays. It is built of red coursed rubble with cherry pointing, with random rubble on the rear. Polished ashlar dressings are present. A central octagonal clocktower rises from this range, topped with a tall octagonal spire and a weather vane dated 1790. The clocktower has keyblocked arches on six sides, four of which are louvred, with a clock face on the north side and one missing from the south. A central arched opening, likely originally a carriage house entrance but now blocked by a modern porch, is situated at the centre of the south-facing range. The outer bays are slightly advanced, with gables, moulded eaves, and strong courses suggesting pediments, featuring three ball finials and blind arches containing windows alongside each. Small windows at the wallhead are present, one with a dormerhead, all with a deep moulded eaves course. The roof is slate. The rear elevation has two later swept dormerheads and a porch.
The west-facing range, dating to circa 1820 and overlooking the road from the castle, is a two-story structure with nine bays. Each three-bay section is divided by giant pilasters that rise from ground level to slightly above the wallhead, supporting moulded entablatures with squat, draped urns. The range is built of coursed cherry pointed rubble with ashlar dressings. The central carriage bay has been blocked by a large, modern farm door. Internally, the west-facing range has been gutted, although lunettes that formerly ventilated stables to the east are still visible.
