Description
This is a garden wall associated with the former North Ballachulish Church of Scotland Manse, built in 1829 by Thomas Telford. The manse itself is a standard single-storey, five-bay H-plan Parliamentary Manse, with alterations and additions from the late 19th century. The manse is constructed of coursed grey rubble stone with contrasting tooled ashlar sandstone dressings, and some contrasting painted margins. A rendered, gabled porch with a cast-iron decorative apex finial masks the central door on the south elevation, flanked by similarly rendered and dated canted bay windows. Later 19th-century single-storey additions are present to the rear, and a gabled end stack is situated in the northwest corner. The windows are 4-pane sashes, the roof has Ballachulish slate, and paired stacks are coped.
The roughly coped rubble garden wall has a wide side entrance flanked by a pair of tooled rubble square gate piers topped with boulder ball finials. A pair of square rubble piers with pyramidal caps and diminutive ball finials mark the centre pedestrian gateway.
The parish of Ballachulish was formed from two areas within Kilmallie Parish, north of Loch Linnhe, encompassing Ardgour of Corran and North Ballachulish. Parliamentary churches were built in both parishes in 1829, along with a manse at Onich. The minister was intended to serve Ardgour and Ballachulish on alternate Sundays, travelling to Ardgour by boat. The North Ballachulish church has been demolished, but the site remains a graveyard to the east of Onich village.
