Description

The Ballachulish Hotel dates to circa 1870 and was designed in the style of Alexander Ross. It is a two-storey and attic asymmetrical building incorporating Gothic and Baronial detailing. The main fronts face north (towards the former ferry terminal) and west. The entrance is located in a re-entrant angle on the northwest side. The building is constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, although some areas to the flanks and rear have been harled.

The principal ground floor windows on the north side are pointed-headed and arranged in a series of four, linked by intervening shafted jambs. Similar detailing is present in the fenestration of a faceted, single-storey bowed bay projecting to the northeast, featuring quatrefoil detailing to the balustrade. There is a further two-storey, faceted entrance porch in the northwest re-entrant angle, also with matching balustrade decoration. A recessed, pointed-headed entrance leads into the lobby. Some first-floor windows on the north and east elevations are also pointed-headed. Gabletted dormers, some of which break the wallhead, contain two- and four-pane glazing. Bartizans with shouldered lancets and pepperpot conical slate roofs are positioned at the wallhead angles of the principal fronts. Trefoil vents are present in the attic gables, along with band and cill courses, and corniced ridge stacks. The roof is slate. A modern two-storey extension and bar entrance project to the east.

The north gable end of a steading range is obscured by a two-storey, T-plan lodge/service accommodation. Constructed from similar materials to the main hotel block, this lodge features long, dummy slits in each face of the projecting gabled wing, incorporating a band course and quatrefoil vent in the gable. A harled single-storey range is located at the rear. Garden walls, built of low, coped rubble, front the hotel and are further enclosed by a high rubble wall to the south.
