Description
The Cameron Mausoleum, located at Callert House, is a tall, rectangular gabled structure likely dating from the later 19th century and possibly designed by Alexander Ross. The mausoleum is oriented east/west and constructed of grey, tooled ashlar with contrasting sandstone ashlar dressings. The east gable features a pointed, hoodmoulded entrance, embellished with moulded architraves and slender nook shafts supporting attenuated stiff-leaf capitals. A decorative cast-iron gate and screen are present. Above the entrance is a large rose window featuring geometric tracery. A large, rear, pointed-headed three-light window is set into the west gable, incorporating slender columns as mullions and corresponding nookshafts; a shaped blind oculus sits above. Other details include a base course, diagonal buttresses, a corbelled eaves cornice, flat skews, an apex cross on the east gable, and a banded fishscale slate roof.
Inside, a single floor tomb is centrally positioned on a floor of black and white tiles. The walls are of polished ashlar, with a coat of arms inset into the south wall. Stained glass remains in the outer lights of the west window. Four tombs with Celtic cross headstones are situated outside the east-facing door.
The mausoleum occupies a commanding position on a rise above Loch Leven and serves as the burial place of the Camerons of Fassifern and Callert, along with various members of the Cameron and Fairfax-Lucy families. The daughter of a Cameron of Callert married a Fairfax-Lucy of Charlecote, Oxfordshire.
