Description
The Episcopal Church of St John in Ballachulish is a rubble church with tooled ashlar dressings, built in the 1842, with a chancel added in 1888. Designed by MacNab of Oban, the church is cruciform in layout and oriented eastwards. The main entrance is centrally located on the west gable, featuring a pointed, hoodmoulded doorway with a double leaf door, above which are paired lancet windows under a continuous hoodmould, and a small blind lancet above. The east gable has a triple lancet window under a continuous hoodmould. Paired lancets are found on the north and south chancel elevations, and similar windows are incorporated into the transept gables and the nave. A bellcote sits atop the apex of the west gable, while apex crosses mark the east gable. There are small, apex-coped stacks, with a dummy stack on the north side, projecting from the transept apexes. The roofs are steeply pitched and covered in local slate, with plain and sawtooth skews.
Inside, the church has plain plaster walls with contrasting painted hoodmoulds highlighting the chancel and transept arches, and the windows. A gilded reredos and simply detailed, panelled choir stalls are also present. The church has group value and remains in use as an ecclesiastical building, replacing an earlier Episcopal Church.
