Description

The Old Stables, located at East Laroch in Ballachulish, is likely of 17th-century origin, although it has undergone alterations in the 18th century and later. Originally built as a single-storey stable and byre, the building was used as an Episcopalian church in the 18th century, a period when it was probably raised in height and a simple bellcote was added. The building is constructed of rubble with a noticeable break in the stonework above the lintel level of the ground floor. On the north elevation, there are two doors towards the west end, while the ground floor also features two blocked windows. Above, one window and several ventilation slits are visible. A modern section of slating is present in the east gable, incorporating what appears to be an aumbry on the outer face. The roof is covered in slate with a red tile ridge. Historical records indicate that Bishop Forbes baptised 179 Episcopalians in Ballachulish in 1732, presumably within this building.
