Description
This is a late 19th-century church hall, originally a school, situated adjacent to the Episcopal Church of St Mary in Glencoe. The building is a tall, single-storey structure with a three-bay south front, connected to the church by a porch. It is built of bullfaced grey rubble stone. The central bay features a gabled projection with a larger window set with multi-pane glazing, and the roof incorporates a pair of triangular vents with cusped slate detailing. A single-storey lean-to extends from the west gable. The church itself, dating back to 1880, is a simple rectangular building of three bays, with a slightly lower single-bay chancel at the east gable. The exterior is constructed from sneck-coursed grey rubble with bullfaced dressings. A gabled entrance porch features a shallow pointed-headed entrance and double leaf doors. There are two windows on both the north and south elevations, each divided into three cusped lights by painted wooden mullions. A similar two-light window appears on the south wall of the chancel, while the west gable has a large, shallow pointed-headed window also using mullions. A square bellcote sits atop the west gable, supported on a slated platform and surmounted by a slender pyramidal slated spire rising from a cusped wooden frame, topped with an apex cross. A vestry is located at the northeast corner. The building has a Ballachulish slate roof. The interior of the church features plain rubble walls, a high pointed-headed arch dividing the nave from the chancel, and a braced rafter roof. The church contains stained glass, a polished red granite font (dated 1887) with a carved wooden cover (1933), a late 19th-century octagonal panelled wooden pulpit, a part-panelled chancel with a gilded reredos, carved and panelled choir stalls and pews dating from the earlier 20th century, adorned with low relief carving and linenfold panelling, and a brass eagle lectern. A simple, roughly coped enclosing wall surrounds the church and former school. The church and its fittings, comprising panelled pews and other carved wooden elements, are of excellent quality.
