Description
This is an early to mid-19th century group of buildings located on Main Street in Glencoe, forming part of the Glencoe and North Lorn Folk Museum. The group comprises a pair of single-storey cottages facing south, positioned alongside the village street, and a separate byre set at a right angle to the cottages, at the west gable.
The cottages, which now serve as the museum’s main building, feature six irregular bays with two doors in each. They are constructed from whitewashed rubble with four-pane windows and have end and a central ridge stack. The roofs are thatched with heather. The interior of the cottages are linked as a single space, and a partially reconstructed cruck, or couple, blade is visible inside.
The byre is a small, single-storey structure with entrance on its long east elevation. It is characterised by slightly battered walls, with rounded corners built using a drystone technique of round and split field boulders, levelled with rows of slate. The gable is weatherboarded, replacing what was likely originally a turf covering, and has a heather thatch roof.
