Description
The Church of Scotland Manse at North Ballachulish was built in 1829 by Thomas Telford as a Parliamentary Manse. It is a standard single-storey, five-bay H-plan building with later 19th-century alterations and additions. The exterior is constructed of coursed grey rubble with contrasting tooled ashlar sandstone dressings, and some painted margins. The central door on the south elevation is hidden behind a rendered, late 19th-century gabled porch, featuring a cast-iron decorative apex finial. Flanking this porch are similarly rendered canted bay windows of the same date. A single-storey, single-bay addition was constructed in the rear court during the late 19th century, as was a gabled end stack in the northwest corner. The windows feature 4-pane glazing, and the roof is covered in Ballachulish slate with coped ridge and paired stacks.
A roughly coped rubble garden wall runs around the site, with a pair of tooled rubble square gate piers, topped with boulder ball finials, flanking a wide side entrance. At the centre of the wall is a pedestrian gateway flanked by square rubble piers with pyramidal caps and diminutive ball finials.
The parish of Ballachulish was formed from two areas within Kilmallie Parish, located north of Loch Linnhe at Ardgour of Corran and North Ballachulish. Parliamentary churches were built in both parishes in 1829, along with a manse at Onich. The minister was intended to serve Ardgour and Ballachulish on alternate Sundays, travelling to Ardgour by boat. The North Ballachulish church was later demolished, but the site remains a graveyard located to the east of Onich village.
