Description

The Governor's House, located on The Parade in Fort William, is an early to mid-18th century building that has seen additions and alterations in the 19th century. It features a T-plan layout and is a two-storey house with an attic. The north front is made of pinned squared rubble, while the other sides are covered in harled rubble. The building has a symmetrical three-bay design with a central door on the north-facing front. To the west, there is an advanced gabled bay that includes a corniced bipartite window on the ground floor, a later 19th-century corniced window above, and a small round-headed attic light. At the rear, there is a substantial projecting stairwell topped with a piended roof, along with two later dormer windows. The windows have two-pane glazing, and the house has ridge and end stacks, topped with a slate roof.

Inside, the layout is simple, serving as part shop and part offices. The staircase features an earlier 19th-century cast-iron balustrade with a polished wooden handrail.
