Description

Duncansburgh Parish Church, located on The Parade in Fort William, was designed by David MacKintosh from Oban and completed in 1881. This Gothic-style church is oriented north-south and features a striking exterior of bullfaced grey sneck coursed rubble, which contrasts with the tooled red ashlar sandstone dressings.

The north gable showcases a large pointed-headed window with geometric tracery, topped by a prominent hoodmould. To the east, there is a square, slightly projecting three-stage tower that includes an entrance at its base. Above the entrance is a dated shouldered lintel with a carved relief of a burning bush in the tympanum, all framed by a moulded and hoodmoulded pointed-headed architrave. The entrance features a double leaf plank door adorned with decorative cast-iron hinges.

The tower is supported by angle buttresses that rise to a pulvinated string course at the base of the upper stage, which has louvred pointed-headed openings on each face, each decorated with nook shafts. The wallhead is corbelled and crenellated. The church's four-bay flanks are lit by narrow round-headed windows with geometric tracery, interspersed with alternate buttresses. The gabled transepts project slightly to the southeast and southwest, each featuring a large window similar to that of the north gable. A rose window illuminates the south gable, and the roof is finished with slate.

Inside, the church has exaggerated bracing in the timber roof. Many of the windows contain stained glass, with dates ranging from 1881 and 1882, as well as works by the Abbey Studios from 1973 to 1979.
