Description
The British Linen Bank, located at 4, 6, and 8 Cameron Square in Fort William, dates from around 1850. This two-storey building with an attic features a wide, four-bay symmetrical front. The facade is made of polished ashlar, while the sides are constructed from rubble. The outer bays on the southeast side have aedicular Roman Doric doorpieces, although these are now blocked and converted into windows. All windows have moulded architraves and segmental headed pediments at the ground floor. The first-floor windows are linked by a cill band, and there are later canted dormers, 2-pane glazing, a moulded eaves cornice, and corniced end stacks, all topped by a slate roof.
Attached to the south gable is an earlier 19th-century two-storey, three-bay house that connects to the main museum. This structure is built of random rubble with polished ashlar dressings. It has a central entrance with a pilastered and corniced doorpiece, which is now blocked as a window. A later entrance has been added in a former ground floor window to the right. The house also features 2-pane glazing, a coped stack, and a slate roof.
Inside, one ground floor room contains panelling and fittings from the Governor's House in Fort William, dating back to the early 18th century. This includes a painted panelled room, a round-headed panelled mural cupboard, and an original moulded stone chimney piece with a moulded wooden mantel shelf, along with a simple corniced ceiling. The turned wood stair balusters, also from the Fort, have been fitted to the staircase leading to the first floor, while later 19th-century cast-iron decorative balusters are present on the attic floor.
