Description

The Leishman Centre comprises a late 18th to early 19th century house and a former barn, located at Achnacon in Glen Coe.

The house is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay structure. It is harled throughout, with a central door on the northwest front, now mostly hidden by a later porch with a side entrance and a piended slate roof. The windows are four-pane, and the end chimney stacks have been renewed. The roof is slate. A small, rear lean-to is linked to the house by a connecting passage.

The barn, now the Leishman Centre, dates to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This rectangular, two-storey building has long northwest and southeast facing elevations. Situated on raised ground, a central door on the southeast frontage is accessed via a long, ramped pathway that runs the full length of the building. The northwest elevation features a pair of long, narrow ventilation slits flanking a first-floor window (formerly a winnowing door), with further doors and windows illuminating the former stables and byres in the raised basement. The barn has multi-pane glazing, modern Velux skylights to the roof on the southeast side, and a slate roof. This is a "bank barn" of the Lochaber type, with access to the first-floor threshing and storage barn achieved via the ramp, and stock accommodation and stabling located in the ground floor (or raised basement). Achnacon was formerly the home of the Stewarts of Achnacon. The building now houses the Glencoe Mountain Rescue HQ.
