Description
Reay Free Church, built in 1844, is a double pile, double aisle church featuring a symmetrical twin-gabled south front. The south front is constructed of tooled rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, while the flanks and rear are made of harl pointed rubble. The church has paired round-headed centre doors, which are flanked by four round-headed windows. A bandcourse at the eaves level connects the skewputts, and there are blind Gothic windows in each gable. An octagonal bellcote, corbelled from a square plinth, rises from the central valley at the front, topped with an octagonal facetted spire and apex stacks. The west elevation features a five-sided Minister's porch that projects from the centre, with a Tudor-headed doorway and windows, along with a tall corniced ridge stack. The roofs are covered with Caithness slate, and there are ball finials on the rear gable apexes. Inside, the church has a plain interior that is now divided into two sections down the centre. In front of the church, there is a short memorial obelisk within a rubble-walled enclosure, which includes front quadrants with a central entrance featuring double wooden gates and a pair of plain Caithness slab gate piers.
