Description
Kiltearn Parish Church is a roofless, T-plan church that was largely re-built between 1790 and 1791. The construction incorporated some earlier walling and medieval details, most notably visible at the east gable. The church is oriented east/west, with a projecting wing on the south elevation. It is constructed of harled rubble with ashlar margins, though much of the harling is now missing. The north facade is symmetrical, featuring two tall, round-headed windows with keystones, blocked at the impost level, flanked by single ground-floor and gallery windows. Round-headed windows with similar detailing are found in the east and west gables. Doorways are located in the outer bays of the south elevation. A double forestair leads to a first-floor corniced doorway on the south gable, accessing the former Foulis aisle, topped by a corniced apex chimney. A bellcote sits at the apex of the west gable.
The east gable retains earlier angle buttresses and vestiges of the hoodmould of a formerly blocked Gothic window. A rubble-walled burial ground surrounds the church. It features a pair of square ashlar gate piers, and contains a burial enclosure for the Munros of Foulis, dating from 1588, along with various 17th, 18th, and 19th-century tombs.
