Description
The burial ground surrounds the ruins of Kiltearn Parish Church. The church itself was substantially rebuilt between 1790 and 1791, forming a T-shaped plan. This construction incorporated some earlier stonework, including remnants of medieval detailing visible in the east gable. The church is oriented east to west, with a projecting wing on the south elevation. The exterior is built of harled rubble with ashlar margins, although much of the harling has been lost over time. The symmetrical north facade features two long, round-headed windows with keystones, now blocked at impost level. These are flanked by single ground floor and gallery windows. Round-headed windows with similar detailing are also present in the east and west gables. Doorways are situated in the outer bays of the south elevation. A double forestair (external staircase) leads to a first-floor doorway with moulded jambs, located in the centre of the south gable, which accesses the former Foulis aisle. A corniced chimney sits above this doorway. A bellcote (small bell tower) is positioned at the apex of the west gable.
Earlier angle buttresses are visible at the east gable, along with vestiges of the hoodmould of a formerly blocked Gothic window. The burial ground is enclosed by rubble walls. A pair of square gate piers mark the entrance. Within the burial ground is a burial enclosure belonging to the Munros of Foulis, dating from 1588, along with numerous 17th, 18th, and 19th century tombs.
