Description
This is an early 19th-century building, likely designed in the style of James Smith, consisting of two storeys and five bays. It was constructed from rubble stone with dressed ashlar details. The plan is almost square.
The central bay projects forward and features a hooded entrance leading to the Minister’s entrance via a flight of steps. This bay rises as a slender, rectangular tower with two shaped sections and an ashlar-faced clock face. The tower terminates in a moulded corniced platform supporting a pilastered bellcote topped with an ogee cap and a worn weathervane. A pair of doors are located in the outer bays, with round-headed windows above. Similar round-headed windows are found in the inner centre bays; these were originally full height from the ground floor but were later divided horizontally to create flat-headed windows in bays two and four of the ground floor. Later corniced wall stacks, rear windows and a rear door have been added. The roof is piended and covered in slate.
The building was originally a Secession Chapel, reflecting a strong tradition of church secession in Easter Ross, and was part of the Kiltearn Parish from 1770 until the Disruption of 1843. Evanton itself dates from around 1800 and was laid out by Mr Fraser of Balconie to replace the former settlement of Drummond; the chapel marks the end of the main street of the planned village. Following its use as a chapel, the building served as a Free Church School, as shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1870. The building is currently empty and in poor condition. A much altered section of the building located to the west is not listed.
