Description
This is a late 18th or early 19th century watch house, a small, single-story octagonal structure built of harled rubble with ashlar dressings. The main entrance is on the west side. Small, corbelled bowed oriel windows are set into the south and east sides, each with a moulded lintel, 18-pane bowed glazing, and the central pane of glass projects from the frame to allow for lantern light. A moulded wallhead cornice runs around the building, topped by a pyramidal slate roof that rises from the inner edge of the wallhead.
The watch house is situated by a pier overlooking Loch Maree and the Letterewe landing place on the southern shore. It represents a very unusual survival. The building now functions as a garden store. Letterewe House and its estate buildings date from the 18th century, with subsequent additions and alterations. The statutory address is Letterewe Watch House (now garden store).
