Description
The steading range at Letterewe House is an H-shaped complex built between the late 18th and late 19th centuries. The central section and the northwest section are barns of the Gairloch/Kintail type, designed for storing hay and corn. The northwest section has been infilled with corrugated iron to create a small cottage. Evidence of cruck framing remains, and both the north and south elevations of the central section feature three wide, louvred openings, which allowed air to circulate and dry the stored crops. A small, crowstepped wing, dating to the later 19th century and originally used as a school, projects from the southwest corner; it has a gable stack and a small window. The school wing adjoins a long, ten-bay range of cart and implement sheds. All buildings have slate roofs. A drystone wall closes off the south re-entrant angle, forming a courtyard.
