Description
Ardgour House is a building dating from 1765, which was reconstructed after a fire in 1825. The house features a central three-storey, five-bay symmetrical south front, with the shell dating from 1765, flanked by two-storey, wide single bay wings at the east and west gables. The exterior is harled, with polished and tooled ashlar margins and dressings. The central door is topped with a round-headed fanlight and narrow sidelights, and is sheltered by a balustraded portico from 1825, supported by monolithic Roman Doric columns. The building has rusticated quoins and a moulded eaves cornice.
The blocking course is stepped and raised in the centre, dating from 1825. The house has hipped end stacks and a piended platform slate roof, along with a projecting rear stairwell. The 1825 side wings are slightly set back and extend to the rear, forming a shallow U-plan court that is now largely infilled. The south fronts have corniced tripartites on the ground floor, with wide three-bay flanks. The building features tall ridge stacks and piended slate roofs with projecting eaves, as well as 2 and 12-pane glazing, with some lattice pane glazing at the rear.
Inside, the original stairwell and possibly the stairs remain, but the rest of the interior dates from 1825. This includes a decorative cast-iron staircase balustrade with a polished wooden handrail. The ground floor dining room and sitting room have chimney pieces made of polished sandstone from 1825, along with panelled and beaded doors and shutters, and moulded doorcases. The first-floor drawing room features a decorative plaster cornice and central rose, a chimney piece with cusped detailing, and panelled and beaded window shutters and doors, as well as moulded doorcases. There is also a decorative plaster rose on the stairwell ceiling.
