Description
This is a late 18th and early 19th century cruck barn situated at Fernaig. It is a long, rectangular structure with its east and west elevations being the longer walls. The barn is constructed of rubble stone with rounded corners. It originally featured paired winnowing doorways situated off-centre, along with wide vents in the side walls and gable ends, though now most of these vents have been blocked – only two remain, the latter being louvred. The roof is covered with corrugated iron.
Inside, the barn contains six pairs of large and heavy cruck blades, which are joined (scarfed) at differing heights and have their feet set into the cills or the wall base. Numerous peg holes are visible, suggesting the timbers may have been re-used, or possibly provided attachment points for rods or drying racks used for hay or corn. The barn’s external measurements are approximately 70 feet by 18 feet. The barn is referenced in I F Grant’s 1961 publication, Highland Folk Ways, page 113.
