Description
This is an early 19th century barn, likely used for hay storage, threshing, and winnowing, typical of the Lochalsh/Kintail region. The barn has long east and west facing elevations. It is constructed of coursed rubble with square corners, and has a later wooden shingle roof and upper gable ends. There are long vents with louvred openings along the sides and gable ends. The roof structure features 11 timber trusses, all collared and pegged. Two pairs of trusses, positioned above the side vents, have scarfed cruck timbers with joints at the wallhead height. Each joint is secured with three wooden nails and one iron bolt, and a small wooden spur is present on each cruck. A winnowing doorway is located at the barn's centre, with a vent positioned above it. Further information can be found in I F Grant’s HIGHLAND FOLK WAYS (1961), page 113.
