Description
The Single Cable Suspension Bridge on the Ardtornish Estate was designed by Samuel Barham around 1892. This bridge is constructed of cast iron and timber and spans the Abhainn a Ghlinne Ghill water. It features ten thin cast-iron hanger frames that are evenly suspended along a single iron bar. The bridge is supported by cast-iron pipe A-frame pylons located on both sides of the river, which are set on dressed stone piers with stone foundations extending into the riverbank. The pylons are further supported by tensile cast-iron cables that are anchored to the hillsides. Timber bearers link the hanger frames, carrying crossways that span timber slats to create the deck. There are timber walkways on either side that connect the deck to the ground level on both sides.
