Description

The Claggan School, designed by Samuel Barham and built in 1877-1878, is a two-storey, steeply gabled, asymmetrical school and schoolhouse made of rendered concrete. It faces south and features a schoolyard at the rear. The west side has a tall single bay gabled schoolroom that rises to full height, with large modern double-glazed windows that have transoms and mullions, along with hoodmoulds and drip-cills. The south window displays chamfering on the transoms and mullions. The entrance to the schoolroom, which is divided into two sections by an internal glazed screen, is located in the re-entrant angle at the rear, where a later cloakroom wing projects from the west return elevation.

The entrance to the single-storey and attic schoolhouse is centrally located on the south front, beneath a canopy that connects to the left window. There is also a canopy over the ground floor window on the east gable. The windows are mainly bipartite, but the first floor of the east gable features a long tripartite window. Additional architectural details include hoodmoulds, multi-pane glazing, bargeboards, decorative wooden pendant apex newels, a tall coped ridge, and a rear stack, all topped with slate roofs.

At the rear, there is a small bargeboarded single-storey outhouse that provides access to the schoolhouse's rear door. The playground behind the school building is enclosed by a concrete wall that also extends to surround the front of both the school and the schoolhouse. The wall is raised at the back to form the rear wall of a single-pitched slate-roofed shelter, which is partially walled in the center of the south front.
