Description
Eachaig Bridge, located in Kilmun, is a single-span wrought iron double warren lattice truss bridge built in 1885 to replace an earlier timber bridge and accommodate heavier traffic. This bridge is a notable example of unaltered wrought iron construction, which is increasingly rare, and it showcases interesting details that reflect the rise in road traffic during the late 19th century, particularly as scenic excursions from Dunoon became more popular.
The bridge features lattice trusses with extensive side bracing and heavy cast iron handrails. Uniquely, the deck is positioned halfway up the trusses. At either end of the bridge, there are ashlar dies and splayed ashlar parapets. An early design for the bridge indicates that a more decorative castellated die was initially planned.
On both sides of the bridge, plaques are displayed that read 'Echaig Bridge Erected by the Trustees of the Dunoon district of roads, Argyleshire', followed by a complete list of the trustees, and 'Richard Gallen Surveyor Dunoon and Cowal roads since 1860'. The engineers for the project were Bell and Miller from Westminster and Glasgow, and the contractor was Hanna, Donald and Wilson from Paisley.
