Description

Corf House, dated 1742 and 1803, with restoration work circa 1968, is a single-story corf house built around a square court. The exterior is modern harling over a rubble core, with tooled rubble dressings. The symmetrical, south-facing entrance front has seven bays, featuring a wide, segmental arched entrance with a datestone above. Three windows flank the entrance on either side, the right side lighting a former dwelling. The windows have multi-pane glazing. The inner court contains a range of stores, with a former fish-house built against the slope in the north range. Three wide, segmental-headed brick fireplaces are present, each fitted with iron pins to support a swey; one is dated 1742 and bears the initials SLL, representing Simon Lord Lovat, and the other datestone displays "S L L / 1742 / H C A F L / 1803". A large stack is located to the north. The roof is piended and covered in corrugated asbestos.

Corf House is a commercial salmon fishing building, reflecting the considerable wealth generated by the Lovat salmon fishings on the River Beauly. Within the inner court, a cobbled surface remains, and a single, large copper cauldron, used for par-boiling fish, is still present. A former ice house, located in the northwest corner, is now gutted. The building continues to be used for commercial salmon fishing. Historical records, including The Statistical Account (1794, page 513) and The New Statistical Account (1841, page 487), provide further context.
