Description

The Beauly Hotel, also known as the Lovatt Arms Hotel, is a symmetrically fronted, two-storey and attic building dating to the later 19th century. It faces southeast and has five bays. The walls are of coursed red rubble with contrasting, tooled ashlar sandstone dressings. The central and outer bays are wider and project slightly, defined by long and short angle margins. The main entrance is centrally positioned, flanked by round-headed narrow windows, and sits beneath a continuous bracketted cornice with central segmental pediment details. The outer bays feature tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors; all windows have rounded angles to the lintels, linked by lintel and band courses. Segmental-headed dormers are fitted with moulded, shaped copes topped with carved stone apex finials. Two of the centre dormers are linked at the wallhead, featuring two- and four-pane glazing. A deep ashlar eaves band and cornice are present, along with paired cornice stacks and a piended platform roof. The northeast return gable is symmetrical with three bays and dormers flanking a central wallhead stack. The southwest return elevation has been altered with the addition of an unfortunate, modern projecting three-storey stairwell. The hotel first appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1872. The later stairwell at the southwest is considered an intrusive alteration.
