Description

Westlea is a large, two-storey and attic building with a shop and dwelling, dating to the later 19th century. The main part of the building is three bays wide, constructed of coursed, tooled red rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, and painted at ground floor level. An adjoining two-storey, single-bay addition was built around 1900 on the north gable.

The façade is symmetrical, with shop entrances in the outer bays, flanked by large shop windows. All openings are square-headed with rounded angles. The first floor has paired, segmental-headed windows with keystones in the outer bays, and a single, similar window in the centre. Dormers are present in the outer bays, featuring shallow painted timber gables and two-pane glazing. Channelled ashlar pilaster strips run along the corners of the main block, and there are corniced end stacks. The roof is slate covered.

A lower wing to the north has a wide, shallow segmental-headed shop window on the ground floor, and a bipartite window on the first floor. This window has multi-pane glazing in the upper sashes, flanked by pilaster strips that clasp the gable and terminate with corniced caps. The gable of this wing is shaped, coped, and topped with an apex finial. The roof is slate.

Westlea appears as the Post Office on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1872. The statutory address is Beauly, Campbell and Co, High Street.
