Description
This is a gardener’s cottage dating to circa 1800, situated within the grounds of Beaufort Castle. It is a single-storey house with an attic, facing south, originally comprising three bays. The exterior is constructed of mixed rubble with elegantly detailed margins and dressings in tooled and polished ashlar. A pedimented portico, likely added later, sits centrally above the front door, supported by paired, slender Roman Doric columns. The entrance is adorned with a simple rectangular fanlight above a 9-panel door, which has reeded detailing to the edges of the panels. A moulded eaves cornice runs around the building, extending onto the gables. Later 19th-century gabled dormers punctuate the outer bays, with a more recent, swept dormer situated behind the pediment. The windows are fitted with 12-pane glazing and the building has end stacks, topped by a slate roof. The rear elevation is symmetrical, featuring a three-window arrangement, where the outer windows are likely later additions. A small, single-storey, single-bay extension with a piended slate roof is attached to the west gable. Inside, the entrance hall has been altered to accommodate a later 19th-century staircase. A room to the west features original beaded window shutters, beaded panelling on the door, a simple dado rail, a late 19th-century wooden chimney piece, and a gate.
