Description
This is an 1846 Free Church of Scotland, situated on an east-west alignment. The church is built of harl-pointed rubble with roughly tooled ashlar dressings. The simple rectangular plan features a single-storey gabled Minister’s porch centrally on the south elevation, with a side entrance and an apex stack. A late 19th century timber porch is located at the west gable, and a modern harled porch sits at the east, both incorporating round-headed gallery windows above. The south elevation has four long, round-headed windows, while two later square-headed windows are found in the centre rear. All round-headed windows have multi-pane glazing with intersecting tracery. A birdcage bellcote with an ogee cap and ball finial is at the west gable apex, with a shaped finial at the east gable; the roof is slate.
Internally, galleries have been removed, and later walls have considerably reduced the central area used for worship. This has created a store to the west and an entrance lobby to the east. A modern, raised, and panelled Minister's desk is positioned centrally on the south wall.
The church is enclosed by a simple rubble wall. Historically, the congregation’s first application to Lord Lovat for land in 1845 was initially refused. He subsequently donated the site in 1845/6, reportedly after having initially intended to build a Roman Catholic church there (though he had already built one at Eskadale in 1826 due to proximity to the Established Church congregation). The site was said to have contained stone previously prepared for the Roman Catholic church, which was then used in the construction of the Free Church.
