Description

Rivendell, originally known as the Old Manse, is a two-storey, three-bay dwelling built in 1838, facing north. It was constructed in front of an earlier house, dating back to the 18th century, which still exists and features a projecting stairwell at the rear. The front of the building is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, while the rear block has a harled finish, also with tooled ashlar dressings.

A square porch, concealing the centre door, has a round-headed entrance, chamfered angles, a wallheaded cornice, and a blocking course. Deep, tooled, chamfered margins highlight all the front windows and the doorway; the upper-floor windows are smaller than those on the ground floor. The front windows have 16-pane glazing with thicker, central wooden mullions within the sash windows. The rear block windows have 12 panes of glass. Two dormers have been added later.

The front block has paired, square, ashlar end stacks set diagonally, while the rear has simpler, coped end stacks. The building is roofed with slate. A single-storey wing is attached at a right angle to the west gable, which was altered in 1983 with the addition of a canted bay, glazed sunroom projecting from the south gable. The building was formerly a Church of Scotland manse and is referenced in the New Statistical Account of 1841.
