Description
Corrie Lodge, built in the 1870s by A & W Reid of Elgin and Inverness, originally comprised three rectangular blocks linked by porches. The design features a symmetrical, three-gabled frontage facing southeast. The exterior is built of harl-rendered rubble stone with carefully finished rubble and some red ashlar dressings. The outer blocks are single-storey, while the central block (originally a schoolhouse) rises to two storeys, incorporating a canted bay window on the ground floor and a six-pane window on the first floor. Each outer block has a large six-pane window set within its front gable, with a small, round-headed, louvred vent above. Plank doors with ornate cast-iron hinges provide access to the entrances. The return elevations of the East and West Wings each feature four windows. Original lattice pane glazing remains in the front windows. Coped end stacks are present on the East and West Wings, while the central Corrie Lodge has shouldered wallhead stacks to either side. Decorative bargeboards with pendant newels adorn the roof, which is covered in slate.
Original plans indicate the buildings were intended as a boys' school (West Wing) and a girls' school (East Wing), with a schoolteacher’s dwelling in the centre. Early Ordnance Survey maps from 1871 show that the outer buildings were constructed before the central dwelling. More recently, the West Wing has been used as a church on Sundays, and the East Wing as a village hall. The buildings are now in use as three separate dwellings. The Moray District Record Office, Forres, holds further information under reference DAWP 1232.
