Description

The West Wing of Corrie Lodge, Tomich, was designed by A & W Reid of Elgin and Inverness and built between 1870 and 1875. It comprises three rectangular blocks linked by porches, presenting a symmetrical three-gabled frontage to the southeast. The buildings are constructed of harl-finished rubble with tooled rubble and some contrasting red ashlar dressings. The outer blocks are single-storey, while the central block (originally a schoolhouse) is two-storey and features a canted bay window on the ground floor and a six-light window on the first floor. Each outer block has a large six-light window in its front gable, with a small, round-headed, louvred vent above. Plank doors with ornate cast-iron hinges provide access to the entrances. Four windows are present on the east and west return elevations of the wings. Original lattice-pane glazing remains in the front windows. Coped end stacks are present on the East and West Wings, while Corrie Lodge, in the central block, has flanked shouldered wallhead stacks. Decorative bargeboards with pendant newels adorn the building, and the roofs are slate.

Original plans indicate the West Wing was intended as a boys' school and the East Wing as a girls' school, with a dwelling for the schoolteacher in the centre. Historic Ordnance Survey maps from 1871 show the outer buildings were constructed initially, with the central dwelling not appearing on the map at that time. In more recent years, the West Wing has been used as a church on Sundays, and the East Wing as a village hall. The buildings are now used as three separate dwellings.
