Description
The East Wing of Corrie Lodge, Tomich, was designed by A & W Reid of Elgin and Inverness, and constructed between 1870 and 1875. It comprises three rectangular blocks linked by porches, creating a symmetrical, three-gabled frontage facing southeast. The building is primarily constructed of harl-finished pointed rubble, with tooled rubble detailing, and some contrasting red ashlar dressings. The outer blocks are single-storey, while the central block (originally a schoolhouse) is two-storey and features a canted bay window on the ground floor and a six-light window on the first floor. Each outer block has a large six-light window in its front gable, with a small, round-headed louvred vent positioned above. Plank doors with ornate cast-iron hinges provide entrance access. There are four windows on the east and west return elevations of the East and West Wings. Original lattice pane glazing remains in the front windows. The East and West Wings have coped end stacks, while Corrie Lodge (the central block) has flanked shouldered wallhead stacks. Decorative bargeboards with pendant newels adorn the building, and the roofs are slate.
Original plans indicate that the East Wing was intended to serve as a girls’ school, the West Wing as a boys’ school, and the central block as the schoolteacher’s dwelling. The first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871 shows the outer buildings, but not the central dwelling. In more recent times, the West Wing has been used as a church on Sundays, and the East Wing as a village hall. The buildings are now converted into three separate dwellings.
