Description

The Drochaid Beul-Ath Cheapain Bridge, built around 1815 by Thomas Telford, is a wide single-span stone arched bridge spanning the River Shiel, near the site of the Battle of Glenshiel. The bridge is constructed of coursed rubble with a dressed stone arch ring, and features buttressed abutments. A long, curved approach extends to the north, and a dressed stone parapet runs along the bridge. The bridge was constructed as part of a parliamentary road project linking Glenmoriston to Shiel Bridge, undertaken in 1815. It is now bypassed by the new alignment of the A87 road. Tenders for the construction were advertised in the Edinburgh Evening Courant on February 27, 1815.
