Description

The stables, located west of the ruined Guisachan House near Tomich, were originally a single-storey, three-bay cottage dating from the early 19th century. Between 1856 and 1860, architects A & W Reid extended and altered the cottage to create a long, symmetrical, single-storey and attic range with a shallow, U-shaped courtyard. The stables are constructed of grey rubble with tooled rubble dressings, with the earlier cottage section displaying pinned rubble on its front elevation.

The symmetrical range fronts south, with a central, slightly advanced, gabled porch featuring a round-headed entrance and decorative bargeboarding. To the east of the porch is a window and a carriage house with a double door, and to the west a window, door, and window. The building’s return gables in the centre have bargeboarded end gables with windows to both the ground and first floors. East of these gables are three carriage houses, while to the west is the incorporated cottage, now featuring a central doorway with flanking windows. There are pairs of bargeboarded dormers, two coped ridge stacks, and a central louvred cupola.

The former cottage sits within the centre of the range and retains its original features. Three carriage houses to the east still have large double doors which now function as shutters, concealing modern glazing. The stables now operate as holiday accommodation. Records relating to the stables are held at the Moray District Record Office, Forres, under reference DAWP 1232.
