Description
Kirkton Farmhouse is a circa 1810, two-story, three-bay house. The main house is harled with tooled ashlar dressings. A later single-story porch obscures the central door and covers the adjacent right-hand window, while later wings extend to the rear and to the east gable, all similarly harled with ashlar dressings. The detailing of the windows and angles exhibits long-and-short elements, and the fenestration is symmetrical, featuring 12-pane glazing with margin detailing on the front windows. The house has long-and-short margined end stacks, topped with a piended slate roof.
A single-story wing with an attic, and three bays, was added in the later 19th century to the east gable. This wing features a central door and three piended dormers rising through the wallhead, along with an end stack and a slate roof.
The house was constructed around 1813 by a Mr MacKid, who was Sheriff and a substitute for Sutherland. Donald Sage, who served as a private tutor there in 1813, mentions the house in his 1889 publication, Memorabilia Domestica.
