Description
Gledfield Mill is a mid-19th century, single-story and lofted, four-bay mill constructed of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. An entrance is located near the centre of the north elevation, and a kiln is situated to the east of the entrance, featuring a pyramidal roof from which the cupola is now missing. An overshot wooden and iron water wheel is housed within the west gable, and is served by a lade that runs through and alongside the estate boundary wall. The mill has a slate roof. A sawmill lean-to is attached to the northwest side.
The interior retains the original kiln and machinery. The mill is built into a north-facing hillside and has been adapted to drive a sawmill. It has been disused since 1950 and is shown on the first Ordnance Survey map of 1875. Further details are documented by John Hume in The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland (1977), pages 289-90.
