Description

This is a Free Church of Scotland building, dated 1849. It is a tall, T-shaped church constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. The north elevation faces the road and features a projecting aisle at the centre, with a round-headed entrance in the re-entrant angle. Long, round-headed windows are located in the flanking bays, and smaller, similar windows are set in the north, east, and west gables. The south elevation has paired, long, round-headed windows either side of a projecting, gabled Minister's porch. The porch has a side entrance reached by a forestair and an apex stack. Round-headed entrances with fanlights are found in the outer bays. The church has multi-pane glazing and a bellcote at the apex of the west gable, along with a dated urn finial at the east end. The roof is slate.

The interior is galleried on five sides and retains its original fittings, including a three-tier pulpit with a sounding board and original pews.

The church is approached by a pair of panelled ashlar gate piers with shaped finials, matching end piers, and a low coped rubble wall linked by simple modern metal railing. The building remains in ecclesiastical use.

References to the building’s construction and opening appeared in the Inverness Courier on May 17, 1849 and June 27, 1850. Further details can be found in Ewing’s Annals of the Free Church, volume ii, page 219.
