Description
The Old School and Old Schoolhouse are a pair of buildings dating from 1852, designed by Andrew Maitland. They are located on Church Street, Lower Gledfield. The buildings consist of a single-storey, near-symmetrical six-bay school and a schoolhouse to the east. The schoolhouse is three bays wide, featuring an advanced, gabled porch in the centre with a round-headed entrance, a double plank door, and a fanlight. A similar porch is found in the outer bay of the schoolroom. The schoolroom occupies the western portion. The schoolroom's east gable has a large multi-pane window, with a later window inserted to the left. A finial sits atop the east apex, and the roof is slate with corniced ridge and end stacks. A small, contemporary or near-contemporary gabled wing extends from the rear of the schoolroom. The buildings are constructed of harl pointed rubble with tooled rubble dressings, and contain 12-pane glazing. Advertisements for tenders appeared in the Inverness Courier on July 22nd and August 5th, 1852.
