Description
The Carron Bridge, dated 1818, was engineered by David Wilson and built as a large single-span bridge over the River Carron. The bridge is constructed of coursed rubble with a high arch ring of ashlar, which has been later rendered. A small flood/cattle arch is situated on the south side, and the parapet is capped with an ashlar cope. A date stone is set into the centre of the south face, above the arch. Shallow end buttresses and splayed approaches are also present. The bridge features various iron repair stays. An inscription worn into the south side of the bridge parapet reads "This bridge was erected by the Second District of Roads, Ross-shire, 1818, Alex……". The surname is indistinct, but "Alex……" is believed to be the local engineer in charge. Advertisements for tenders for the bridge’s construction appeared in the Edinburgh Evening Courant (November 27, 1817) and the Inverness Journal (October 31, 1817).
